EDITED BY: Jeff Bigler

Mark Minshall runs the Fishermans warehouse in Columbus Ohio and has been a long time friend of ours, ever since we bought our first compounds from him way back when Sarah and I first started dating. In fact, Mark was the #1 Bow mechanic mentor of mine who taught me how to tune my bow, cut and perfect my arrows, and make my bow the most efficient bow I could possibly have. Every time I came into the shop he always took the time to help me understand why he was doing what he was doing and coaching me on how to do it myself. After 4 years of him training me, I now can do all my own bow mechanics and arrow building because of his patients and help. Over those years, we’ve became true friends and hunting buddies. When i had this giant buck I’d been trying to kill for 2 years finally start being constant in the prime of his life, with both Sarah and I tagged out, I wanted nothing more than to hook a friend up with a buck of a lifetime. With this buck being 6-7 years old, maybe even older, he was likely the biggest he’d ever be, this year was the year to try and kill him. I needed a friend that I could trust, someone that was a heck of a shot with a bow, could hunt during the week, and help keep feed there every couple of days because the deer and coon density was so high and they were going through it so quickly. So I called my dear friend Mark and got him permission on the property, and the rest was history! Mark made a perfect 33 yard shot and the buck didn’t go more than 40 yards. A great buck for a great friend! Congrats Mark!

5 Ways to Fix a NOCTURNAL Deer Hunting Parcel

The bad news is that nocturnal deer herds exist on the majority of deer hunting parcels across the entire country, in particular when it comes to mature bucks. However, the good news is that you can FIX a nocturnal deer parcel in less than one year. By defining daily deer movement and deer bedding use, you can then define that your access and entrance to stand locations are spook free. Defining daily deer use is the first step in making sure that you are not placing yourself in a position to spook deer, and to ultimately create a nocturnal deer herd. Here are 5 ways to make sure that you can fix a nocturnal deer herd, before the deer hunting season begins.

Why hunt coyotes?

As 4th generation ranchers and farmers, hunting coyotes is not just a hobby or a pastime for O’Neill Ops. They have a duty to protect the cattle that they raise for food. For them, predator hunting is not merely a sport, but a way of life.

Coyotes are presently the most abundant livestock predators in western North America, causing the majority of sheep, goat, and cattle losses. For example, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, coyotes were responsible for 60.5% of the 224,000 sheep deaths attributed to predation in 2004. The total number of sheep deaths in 2004 comprised 2.22% of the total sheep and lamb population in the United States, which, according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service USDA report, totaled 4.66 million and 7.80 million heads respectively as of July 1, 2005. Because coyote populations are typically many times greater and more widely distributed than those of wolves, coyotes cause more overall predation losses. The United States government agents routinely shoot, poison, trap, and kill about 90,000 coyotes each year to protect livestock.

Coyotes typically bite the throat just behind the jaw and below the ear when attacking adult sheep or goats, with death commonly resulting from suffocation. Blood loss is usually a secondary cause of death. Calves and heavily fleeced sheep are killed by attacking the flanks or hindquarters, causing shock and blood loss. When attacking smaller prey, such as young lambs, the kill is made by biting the skull and spinal regions, causing massive tissue and bone damage. Small or young prey may be completely carried off, leaving only blood as evidence of a kill.

In the absence of hunting pressure on coyotes practiced by rural people, urban coyotes are losing their fear of humans, which is further worsened by people intentionally or unintentionally feeding coyotes. In such situations, some coyotes have begun to act aggressively toward humans, chasing joggers and bicyclists, confronting people walking their dogs, and stalking small children. Non-rabid coyotes in these areas sometimes target small children, mostly under the age of 10, though some adults have been bitten.

2018 Turkey Hunt #5 Evening hunt

I found this bird one morning before work hammering away on public land. There was a truck parked near him hunting so I eased on to work. That evening I came back to the same spot just to see if a small miracle happened and the guy didnt kill the gobbling fool that morning. About 15 to 20 minutes before dark I hit the call and he hammered back way off in the distance. He came running to me looking for the lonely hen to fly up and roost with. The lonely hen had a gun……

Fired Up – Hunting a Monster OTC Idaho Bull Elk in a Forest Fire

In this Episode of Elk101.com’s “Vintage Hunts”, travel back to 2006 with Corey Jacobsen and David Burdette as they chase bugling bulls in Corey’s home state of Idaho.

2006 was a tough year for elk hunting in Idaho due to forest fires. However, even with the limited areas to hunt due to forest and road restrictions, Corey and David were able to find a huge bull elk early in the season. The bull was bugling from his bedding area on a ridge that was enveloped in thick smoke.

After some coaxing from Corey, the bull made his way down the hill and into the setup for an opportunity of a lifetime for David…
